What the Board Said

In a statement dated June 4, 2026, the GCBOM clarified several key points:

• The position statement was not intended to create new law or policy. The Board describes it as a communication tool to provide clarity on its longstanding interpretation of existing laws and regulations.

• No APPs or physicians are being advised to close their practice or stop practicing as a result of the statement.

• No currently active protocols are being terminated as a result of the position statement.

• The Board's stated concern is ensuring meaningful collaboration between physicians and APPs — specifically addressing compensated arrangements that lack substantive collaboration, which the Board says has become more apparent through data collected via its new ThoughtSpan system.

• Moving forward, the Board commits to closely examining physician-APP relationships when approving protocol agreements, with a focus on ensuring independent medical judgment and truly collaborative relationships.

• The Board will pursue collaboration with other regulatory boards — including the Board of Nursing and the Board of Pharmacy — on an interpretation of Georgia law that protects the health and safety of Georgia citizens.
