A Message to Georgia APRNs and the Citizens of Georgia

Georgia APRNs, healthcare leaders, patients, and citizens:
Like many of you, I am frustrated and deeply disappointed that the response from the Georgia Composite Medical Board fell far short of the clarity that Georgia APRNs, physicians, employers, and patients desperately needed regarding the collaborative relationship between APRNs and delegating physicians.
While there have been suggestions that the Board's position will have little or no impact on day-to-day patient care, the reality we are hearing from across Georgia tells a very different story.
We have received reports from APRNs throughout the state whose collaborating and delegating physicians , whether compensated or uncompensated, are choosing to terminate their collaborative agreements. As a result, practices are closing, services are being reduced, and patients are already losing access to care.
Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners are being forced to limit services and turn away patients in need of mental health treatment, including individuals who may no longer have timely access to essential medications. Primary care practices are facing uncertainty and disruption, with some unable to continue caring for patients because collaborative agreements are being withdrawn. Every terminated agreement represents patients whose access to healthcare is now at risk because current Georgia law requires APRNs to maintain a collaborative agreement in order to provide care.
